Abstract
Fashion studies stand at the crossroads of different but closely related disciplinary fields, such as economics, politics, semiology, sociology, anthropology, cultural history, archival studies, literature, linguistics, psychology, ethics and pedagogy, architecture and the decorative arts: so many descriptive and interpretive approaches that constitute a unique cultural, linguistic, encyclopaedic fabric in which to move for each temporal and documentary focus, within which interesting avenues of linguistic and terminological analysis can be developed. Language thus becomes the key to accessing this vast heritage, ordering and coordinating the different parts that coexist in this system. We propose to describe the approach developed through the study of a case, that of the marinière, so well known in the 20th century, i.e. the striped T-shirt.
