Abstract
In the Sonata de otoño (1902), the character of Javier de Bradomín seems to personify the stereotyped figure of the traditional don Juan. Valle-Inclán represents him as a reflexive man, still related to an idyllic past. Despite this, however, with his nihilistic defense of beauty, Bradomín converts himself into the perfect antagonist of the capitalistic and liberal system and the exponent of a new and refined sensibility. The aim of this article is to underline the relationships between the traditional features of the fictional character and the more modern aspects which determines his pertinence to modernity.
