Abstract
Based on Vatican documentation relating to the Pius XI' pontificate, the essay sheds light on Holy See's reactions to the German annexation of Austria (March 1938), focusing particularly on the role played by Pope Pius XI, Secretary of State cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, Apostolic Nuncios Cicognani and Orsenigo as well as on their relations with Austrian bishops (including the rector of the German national church in Rome Santa Maria dell'Anima mgr. Alois Hudal) and Nazi officials.
