Abstract
This paper aims, on the one hand, at clarifying the relations between epistemic holism and linguistic holism, tracing the stages that led from positivist reductionism to epistemic holism. On the other, it aims at distinguishing the views of Duhem and Quine, which are all too often confused: for, the former restricted holism to the limited sphere of physics, whereas the latter refers to knowledge as a whole. Since holism presents highly counterintuitive claims, the author offers a systemic approach which avoids both reductionism and the shortcomings of holism.
