Abstract
This paper collects the evidence for the Greek knowledge of the Celts before the Gallic invasion in Greece, 280/279 BC. While the rare direct contacts conveyed the image of brave and valiant warriors, the cultural and philosophic speculation from the Pythagoreans to Aristotle created the image of good and sage barbarians, which was destroyed by the terrible impact of the sack of Delphi in 279 BC.
