Abstract
This chapter reflects on the requirements of a fair and 'just' judgement - both in ethical terms, and in legal terms - starting from novels and plays by Alessandro Manzoni ("History of the Infamous Column"; "The Bethroted"), Primo Levi ("If This Is a Man"; "The Drowned and the Saved"), Leonardo Sciascia ("The Witch and the Captain"; "Open Doors") and Robert Bolt ("A Man for All Seasons"), reading these literary works through the conceptual frame privided by philosophers such as Hannah Arendt and Susan Sontag.
