Abstract
The paper intends to study the management of Common Ground (CG) in the dialogues of Roman
tragedies. It focuses on dialogues in which the speakers cannot understand each other and explores
the role which CG plays in communications fraught with such difficulties. Corpus for this case
study is taken from tragic dialogues, as tragedy deals with difficulties which mostly do not get
resolved, with contrasts which cannot be agreed upon: this literary genre convention is a promising
source of examples for a research focussing on problems in handling communications.
