Abstract
Introduction to a volume that examines the processes of economic, social, and territorial transformation of the Milanese countryside between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, taking the case of Cassina Anna as a privileged analytical vantage point. The text considers the role of the Lombard nobility, particularly the Visconti di Modrone family, in redefining the relationships between landed property, entrepreneurial initiative, and agricultural modernization. Through a microhistorical approach, the study analyses the long-term dynamics that accompanied the integration of the rural world into urban development.
