Abstract

French translation of the chapter on doubt by al-Jâhiz, Kitâb al-Hayawân, ed. ‘Abd as-Salâm Hârûn, Mustafâ al-Bâbî al-Halabî, al-Qâhira 1938-1945, vol. 6, pp. 35-37.\r\nCan doubt have a positive role in the process of knowledge? The celebrated writer (and Mu'tazili theologian) al-Jahiz, who valued doubt as a means to reach certainty, gathers some memorable sayings on the subject. This attitude seems to be crucial also for a reform in contemporary Islamic thought.
