Abstract
Catholic Church and Suburbs in Milan during the “Italian Economic Miracle”
The twentieth century was the time of the Church’s “discovery” of the periphery after
centuries at the “center” of the life of the European city. The Church of Milan faced
the problems raised by the periphery, especially in the years of the episcopate of G.B.
Montini (1954-1963). The Church chose not to be an observer. The suburbs and its
inhabitants represented “another city” to be integrated, with an effort of analysis and
comprehension that had one of its essential elements in the “Milan Mission” (1957):
the plan to build new parishes in the city’s working class peripheries.
