Abstract
The formation of the periphery of Milan is a result of industrialization and was accompanied by the transformation of the historic center in the seat of a bourgeois
elite of national importance. The social integration between the inner centre and the working-class suburbs counterbalanced the hierarchies of space and class for almost a hundred years but entered into crisis in the last decades of the twentieth century. Today, the question of recovering the most deprived peripheral areas is linked to the city's internationalization
and the redefinition of the relations with the regional hinterland.
