Abstract
The article considers the ways of representing the Holy Land between late antiquity and the Middle Ages and the different functions of the preserved testimonies. This analysis ranges from the floor mosaic preserved in Madaba, an almost unique example of Byzantine cartography, to the medieval mappae mundi and to the topographical representations of Matteo Paris († 1259) and Pietro Vesconte († 1330 ca.).
