Abstract

Bassani-Vittorini Correspondence. Unpublished Letters in the Cultural Archives of the Catholic University of Milan • In the paper, eleven letters that Giorgio Bassani and Elio Vittorini sent to each other between July 1942 and February 1943 are edited. At the time, Vittorini was a consultant and editorial director of Bompiani, and he contacted Bassani to ask him to translate some works of French literature to be published in the series “Corona”, which he then directed. While at the beginning of the correspondence the subject was Racine’s Phédre, in the end the choice fell upon Le Roman Bourgeois by the seventeenth-century writer Antoine Furetière. This correspondence offers the opportunity to discover hitherto unknown aspects of the relationship between the two 20th-century authors, united in those years by their commitment to antifascist values and their engagement in the Resistance.
