Abstract
The chapter presents facts and companies that have characterized the Italian stock market from 1861 to 2011. Origins and development of Italian stock exchanges, market size, dynamics of listed companies with details on the main equities listed, territorial statistics and relationship with the economic development of the country. An index of stock prices is also built.
From the investor's side, the calculations show that in the long term equity investment has not produced satisfactory results, except for some limited periods that coincided with positive phases of Italian economic development
