Abstract
The article examines the position of the Holy See towards the Armenian question between the end of the 19th century and the First World War. The pro-Ottoman line of the Holy See aimed to preserve the Ottoman pluralism fundamental for the life of Catholic - and more generally Christian - communities in the East. During the massacres of the Armenians at the end of the 19th century and then also during the First World War, the Holy See carried out an action aimed at promoting a peaceful solution to the violence, while at the same time trying to give humanitarian aid to Christian populations, even if not Catholic.
