Abstract
The essay addresses Piero Dorazio's tenure as instructor and Professor of Painting at the Univesrity of Pennsylvania, from 1960 to 1970. Among the process of reshaping of the the teaching of visual arts in the American university, the School of Fine Arts opted for a complex solution, choosing a polytechnic, Bauhaus-based program, while maintaining the categories and terminology of the Beaux-Arts model. Dorazio took this ambiguity further, developing connections between his Deaprtment and the contemporary art world, and promoting the Department's role as a main contributor in the creation of the ICA in Philadelphia. The essay traces the parable of this experience, analyzing its postioning among the debate on the teaching of art in the universities of the Ivy League.
