Abstract
This study focuses on the first definition and test of a surveying methodology aimed at the
classification of periurban areas, whose agricultural and ecological functions prove very
important within the landscape mosaic. Based on the critical analysis of the state of the art
of the various studies and experiences at national and European level and on a
multidisciplinary approach, the proposed methodology has been tested on a case study of
the province of Bologna. The results confirm the importance of an in-depth classification of
the different typologies of periurban farm lands based on their spatial and functional
relations with the landscape context. These first result proved useful to further develop and
calibrate a methodology aimed at supporting the definition of land use and landscape
planning policies implemented at various levels.
