Alternative Work Arrangement and Artificial Intelligence: A Bibliometric Literature Review

Risultato della ricerca: Contributo in libroContributo a conferenza

Abstract

The organizational design of firms is increasingly affected by digital transformation initiatives, where technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), often generate instability in working and organizational practices. In the literature, some researchers are exploring the latest conceptualizations of work arrangements, such as remote, hybrid, and fluid work. Although the discussion on alternative work arrangements and technology adoption spans over thirty years of research, few\r\nstudies provide a comprehensive understanding of the heterogeneous conceptualizations, antecedents, and innovations relative to different forms and practices of work. This study proposes a comprehensive synthesis of such a discourse, examining the interconnection with the AI domain. By manually selecting\r\na sample of 341 over 1129 documents retrieved on Scopus, ranging from 1992 to (early) 2024, we conducted a bibliometric literature review, performing descriptive and conceptual analyses. We identified six themes that underline the significant impact of AI on transforming various aspects of work, requiring a new set of skills and new management approaches from both organizations and individuals. This study contributes to the existing body of literature on non-standard forms of employment and could offer insights that can guide managers in identifying effective strategies for workforce management.
