Abstract
The essay is about the third parliament of the Italian Republic, drawing attention to the three governments headed by Amintore Fanfani in that period. The first government, led by the DC and PSDI parties, had a very ambitious reform programme in the educational, social and economic fields, but this experience lasted a only short time because of the conflicts inside the two parties supporting the executive. In July of 1960, Fanfani headed a government again; it was entirely supported by the DC party, but it could also count on other political forces, from monarchists to Nenni socialists. It was the most long-lasting government of the third parliament, and it was characterised by truly effective reformism. Lastly, the fourth Fanfani government opened to the left. Reforms were carried out intensely; meanwhile, intervention by the State and the parties increased in the economy and in society.
