Nutrition for athletes is an evolving field with research that is published annually by the hundreds, it's often difficult to keep up to date on the subject. This paper is an update of five years since it was published the first article on the occasion of the launch of JISSN in 2004 and has a well-referenced overview of the current state of science in terms of optimization of training and athletic performance through 'power. Specifically, provides an overview of: 1) how to define the category of ergogenic supplements and diet; 2) how supplements are regulated under the law; 3) how to evaluate the scientific merit of nutritional supplements; 4) General nutritional strategies to optimize performance and improve recovery; 5) The present knowledge of the ergogenic value that nutrition and dietary supplementation have on increasing or decreasing weight and improving performance. We hope that members of the ISSN as well as individuals interested in sports nutrition find this review useful in their daily practice with clients.
