Abstract

Utilitarianism is – both in its descriptive and normative aspects – the\r\nmain ethical foundation of contemporary economics. After describing the principles of early Utilitarianism and its implications for economics, the normative aspect of Utilitarianism is critically discussed, taking its cue from the Appendix to Chapter IIIof Alessandro Manzoni’s “Osservazioni sulla Morale Cattolica”.
