Abstract
The contribution illustrates characteristics of Eduard Norden’s commentary on the sixth Book of Virgil’s Aeneid. Norden’s work is analyzed in terms of its genesis and relationship with analogous commentaries by Georg Kaibel on Sophocles’ Electra and by Richard Heinze on the third book of Lucretius’ De rerum natura. Salient features of the commentary are discussed in their specific cultural context. Due importance is given to the influence of the method of August Boeckh and the teachings of Hermann Usener.
