Abstract
This report contains the preliminary results of new research carried out at the Roman baths of\r\nAlbintimilium excavated by Nino Lamboglia between the 1950s and the 1970s. The careful reanalysis of\r\nthe original documentation and the finds from the excavation, together with the use of new procedures\r\nfor exploring and classifying the surviving buildings, shed new light on the excavated structures, their\r\ninterpretation and the chronology of the settlement. The detailed stratigraphic analysis of the walls of\r\nthe baths complex, which had never previously been carried out, has enabled a preliminary definition\r\nof the entire complex into six phases, with regard to the building and the area in which it was built.\r\nThe material and structures were initially divided into Reference Units, a methodology that had been\r\nlittle used for contexts prior to late antiquity/the medieval period and for ruined structures (Brogiolo,\r\nCagnana 2012). This volume presents the results of this work which, in the light of recent research\r\ninto the stone wall faces of the baths building, suggests a new interpretation for the baths complex of\r\nAlbintimilium. It also illustrates the importance of applying this methodology to the complex reassessment\r\nof ancient structural contexts excavated in previous centuries.
