Abstract
This is the first (annotated) Italian translation of Beyond Orpheus. Studies in Musical Structure (Cambridge , Mass.: MIT Press, 1979), an important musico-analytical book by David Epstein (1930-2002) that sums up – as Prof. John Harbison wrote – his “multifaceted contributions as a great performer [and conductor of the MIT Symphony Orchestra for 33 years until 1998], original composer and influential theoretician [at MIT]. David linked his activities together, using his practical experience in making music to inform his theoretical contributions”. In his book, examining the elements of musical structure and the ways they provide unity, coherence and uniqueness in classic-romantic music, Epstein defines the concept of Grundgestalt, or "basic shape" and follows its development from the music of the classic-romantic Viennese school to the twelve-tone compositions of Schoenberg.
