Abstract
The paper analyses the relationship between bishops and monasteries in mediaeval Piedmont in the 10th and 11th centuries. It focuses not only on conflictual situations (linked to the autonomistic tendencies of some abbeys) but also on collaborative relationships and on bishop foundations of monasteries. The result is a composite picture in which monasteries appear as indispensable elements in the strengthening of diocesan authority.
