Abstract
Zakarriyah (in Arabic: زَكَرِيَّا [Zakariyya]) the biblical father of John the Baptist (Yaḥyā), the priest who was visited by the archangel Gabriel (Luke 1, 11-20), is also mentioned seven times in four Quranic passages, both Meccan and Medinan. Unlike his son John, a prophet among the other prophets (cf. 3,39), the Quran never proclaims Zakarriyah directly as prophet, but in Surah 6,85 he is presented among “the righteous” with the prophets John, Jesus and Elias.
