Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] On the basis of a qualitative analysis and cross-linguistic and cultural perspectives, Wolfgang Imo examines which strategies German and Chinese SMS writers use to overcome the dilemma of the emotional instability of love relationships in their SMS communication. He refers to a fund of approximately 9,000 Chinese and about 7,000 German SMS messages and uses examples to illustrate that the communication and love partners of the two countries sometimes use different approaches to sincerity and perseverance While the Chinese text message reveals the pattern of a staged, ritualized termination of the relationship ("You just send me a kiss, you do not love me anymore! (...) Let's separate!"), The German SMS data shows rituals of a "Frotzelns" and "Kalauerns". To further investigate, the author calls for the creation of systematic, consistently translated, publicly available corpora with rich metadata.
