Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Following successful completion of both the theoretical and practical Phonetics courses at the Facoltà di Scienze Linguistiche e Letterature Straniere of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, this booklet presents an expanded revision of this booklet. Despite extensive changes, in particular by the addition of many texts, neither the structure of the book nor its basic concept was changed. The following principle continues to apply to lutes and melodies: It is aimed at adult learners of all levels, beginners and advanced students, who are seeking to enter German pronunciation. It is based on the Contrastive Prosody method developed in 1994 at the Catholic University of Milan and has since been used successfully in a wide variety of learning situations, which, in contrast to the traditional segment-oriented methods of acquiring pronunciation in the context of controlled - school or university - foreign language teaching, the prosody (literally "the hinzugesungene", ie word and sentence accents, pauses, rhythm, voice quality, volume, pitch, duration, intonation, emphasis levels, etc.) in the foreground and only in a later exercise phase - if any - the attention the individual sounds (vowels and consonants, diphthongs and affricates). It would be ideal to practice the texts according to the premises of the Contrastive Prosody Method presented in the introduction. The exercise texts are grouped into ten units corresponding to the ten weeks of an academic semester at Università Cattolica; they follow a progression that has been developed in the last fifteen years against the background of practical experience in the practice of pronunciation education for adult learners of Italian native language. Therefore, the tutorials, which are suitable both for self-study and for work under the guidance of a lecturer, should be used in the order given here. Of lutes and melodies can also be used as a booklet for theoretical phonetics courses; the texts are subdivided into larger units according to their phonetic focus, so that the learners can deepen individual problematic aspects of the oral communication after completing the exercise series.
