Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] For foreign-language experts of Italian mother tongue who have to deal with subject-specific tasks in small or medium-sized international companies, the effective and efficient examination of subject-specific texts in the foreign language poses a challenging challenge. The technically correct treatment or translation of subject-specific word-forming products, the as essential information carriers make up a high proportion of internal and external documentation. Knowledge of subject-specific word formation patterns can be obtained relatively simply by querying ad hoc-formed corpora. The article reports on an experimental lesson module developed at the Catholic University of Brescia within the framework of the course "German as a technical language". The goal of the module was the development of specialist foreign language competences as well as job-relevant application skills based on corpus-based analyzes. An example of this is the work of a working student who was commissioned with the translation of purchasing conditions at the workplace. At the interface between legal, technical and economic terminology, the type of text "purchasing condition" has a certain complexity. Particularly problematic for the student was the reconstruction of the respective specific semantic performance of prefixes in word source typical word formations (eg delivery, delivery, delivery, subsequent delivery, etc.) as well as the finding of adequate Italian equivalents given the incomplete inclusion in conventional bilingual dictionaries. By evaluating the comparative corpus of German and Italian purchasing conditions, which was generated ad hoc in class, the student was able to optimally cover her linguistic and conceptual information needs and significantly increase the quality of her text-based services. The subject-language knowledge derived from the corpus was further processed and stored in a company-internal database for future use. On the basis of this pilot experience and an increasingly intensive cooperation with companies in the province of Brescia, the module is now being developed to promote a lively exchange of knowledge and skills between the university and the professional world.
