Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume contains the proceedings of the international conference "Musical visions. Relations between music and visual arts in the twentieth century" (held at the Catholic University of Milan on 12 May 2006) and some contributions related to the subject of that meeting. In the various interventions - signed by important scholars, artists and musicians - many of the infinite declinations of the vast theme of the comparison between visual expression and sound are dealt with. It ranges from essays of a historical nature, signed by scholars of the subject, to testimonies from the creative front: of artists who look at the possible implications of their own research with the world of music, also from a procedural point of view; and of composers who are inspired or try to hypothesize contaminations between the language of sounds and that of colors and shapes. Correspondences, exchanges, hybridizations: these are the main directions of a dialogue that has known, from the end of the nineteenth century to the present, multiple lines of development. From the symbolist age to the season of historical avant-gardes, from the innovative ferments of the Sixties and Seventies to the most recent events of the two disciplines, music and visual arts have never ceased to scrutinize, confront and influence each other.
