Abstract

Evaluation of the small bowel (SB) has always been difficult because of its length and multiple loops and its study can be delayed by the inability to adequately visualize this area using standard radiology or endoscopy. Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) was developed to allow greater visualization of the entire SB but its use can be contraindicated in patients with SB strictures. The Given® patency system is a new diagnostic tool developed to detect SB strictures before using VCE based on the theory that the intact capsule would be unable to pass through a stricture and would therefore disintegrate over time.
