Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay draws the conclusions of the proceedings of the international conference Nigra sum, held in the month of May 2010 at the sanctuary of Oropa (Biella), related to worship, shrines and images of the black Madonnas of Europe. The issues related to the origin of the particular pigmentation of the Black Madonnas are discussed, to the passage from pagan cults of female divinities to Christian devotion to the Virgin, to the consequences of this cult in the history of women's emancipation, to the "patriotic" bond of a simulacrum or of an icon of the Virgin in famous Marian shrines of Europe, such as Czestochowa, Montserrat, and, at the time of the Savoy, Oropa.
