[Autom. eng. transl.] Figurative art and literature can be a tool through which man, forced to leave the intimate place of self-affection, learns to understand himself and others by sharing his most intimate emotions. Art can be a response to suffering and be a salvation and a medicine, a place of unveiling of human travail in the disease whether it be of a physical, psychic or existential nature, a tool to reconstruct one's identity threatened by the disease that receives the consistency of the written word or image. The article examines the correspondence of the artist V. van Gogh, in particular the pages dedicated to his experience of illness and the relationship with the doctor and friend Gachet. The letters illuminate the human travail of Van Gogh, making us see the experience behind his paintings.
