Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] ntroduction "Confined" environments, where the majority of the population spends between 80 and 90% of their time, are increasingly the subject of concern in relation to "indoor" risk factors. Among these, radon, the second leading cause of lung cancer, deserves special attention, especially in those environments, such as schools, where the stay is prolonged and those exposed are particularly fragile. The present work reports the results of a monitoring activity of this gas within a sample of Italian schools in order to assess the exposure of teachers and students, while promoting the culture of prevention. Materials and Methods The environmental diffusion of the Radon was evaluated through the use of an active "Continuous Radon Monitor - 1028" detector of the "Sun Nuclear Corporation" in 7 Italian schools. The minimum monitoring period was 48 consecutive hours with continuous sampling frequency Physicians in specialized training and Prevention technicians of the Institute of Hygiene of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome, after having recorded in a specific form the structural information relating to the building and the perception of the phenomenon by of the residents, placed the instrument at respiratory height (between 1 and 1.20 meters from the ground) in a room representative of the "worst case" of the school.The data were interpreted in accordance with current legislation (Legislative Decree 241/00 , transposition of Recommendation 90/143 / EURATOM) and have been elaborated through descriptive and inferential statistical analysis through software: "Microsoft Excel 2007 "and" Stata IC 9.2 for Mac "(Intercooled Stata 9.2 for Mac Intosh, Stata Corporation Lakeway, USA, 2007). Results A total of 7 schools were monitored in 6 cities in 5 Italian regions. The average concentrations detected in our study [80,87 ± 72,4Bq / m3] are in line with other epidemiological studies already conducted in Italy and, similar to the latter, show significant differences between the various sampled schools, with values ranging from 0 Bq / m3 and 364.3 Bq / m3. Radon concentrations were significantly lower in the presence of students and staff, citing this mainly to the ventilation that the environment suffered in the presence of people, compared to their absence, with radon dilution. The study also revealed a lack of awareness of the problems connected to indoor pollution, especially related to radon, despite the considerable interest in investigating these issues both from the teaching staff and from the students. Discussion and Conclusions From the results highlighted above, the risk from exposure to indoor radon in sampled schools can be considered generally low, especially given the lower concentrations that were recorded when students / teachers are active and therefore within school buildings. As a logical consequence of environmental assessment, for a phase of environmental health education, our study was also important to explain to students the risk associated with exposure to radon and to share with them and with school staff the best strategies to reduce / control this risk in order to contribute to improving indoor air quality in schools.
