Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] INTRODUCTION: In the hospital environment, safety is of primary importance and must be pursued through environmental monitoring and control. To this end, the Complex Operational Unit (UOC) Hospital Hygiene of the A Gemelli University Hospital Foundation (FPG) acts as a technical verification and consulting body for the Health Department and makes use of the integrated activity of medical and health expertise in 6 areas ( A- Waters, B-Foods, C- Controlled Environments, D-Products and Mandatory Sterile Procedures, E-Expertise-Education-Evidence, M-Microclima). The purpose of the study is to evaluate activities and products in Area D as an indirect estimate of patient safety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six procedures pertain to Area D, each aimed at controlling a mandatory sterile matrix: eye drops and other pharmaceutical preparations -D1, blood component units -D2, bags for parenteral nutrition -D3, sterilizing machines -D4, radiopharmaceuticals - D5 and mediafill tests -D6. The frequency of the checks is scheduled according to the relevant laws, Official Pharmacopoeia, guidelines. The Procedures result in the production of sanitary and hygiene opinions: ordinary (PO), verification of the ordinary (PVO), conformity (PC), verification of conformity (PVC). The warning (PA), generated following preliminary results that do not comply with the expected, can determine the activation of Focus Group in order to establish and adopt timely corrective measures aimed at restoring security conditions. RESULTS: Procedures were applied 42 times in 2015 and 51 in 2016 (+ 21.4%) hesitating in: 64% PO and PVO, 36% PC (2015); 67% PO and PVO and 33% PC (2016) and no PVC in the two-year period considered. In the same period there was a reduction of 53% of PA and an increase of 43% and 38% in the use of Procedures D4 and D6 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows an increase in the use of Procedures due to a greater attention to the hygienic-sanitary surveillance by the FPG and a reduction in the number of alerts, hesitating in a greater environmental safety for patients, visitors and operators. The study summarizes the results in the short term and it will be useful to monitor the trend over time, extending the evaluation also to the other areas of intervention of the UOC.
