Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The crisis of welfare systems and the loss of the central role of the family have profound effects on the dynamics of society and on the evolution of inequalities, giving rise to problems of great importance that concern the well-being and living conditions of entire populations and generations different. In this context, economic and social policy decisions take on a central and strategic role to govern the phenomena described and to favor the development of the country. The relevance of these issues for social well-being is evidenced by the intense research activity of which they are the object of an international level. However, little is known about the results of such research among the general public; often, in fact, even in the social sciences academic research is expressed through technical modes and languages that make it actually accessible only to professionals. Building on a conference held at the Catholic University of Milan in 2013, the volume provides new evidence and analysis on important issues such as population aging, poor social mobility, increased migration flows, combining standards of methodological rigor typical of economic analysis with a language as simple as possible and aimed at communicating the substance of the results
