Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay offers a historical-religious analysis of the passage offered by Augustine of Hippo (de doctr. Chr. II, 40.60), in which the Hipponese points out, as an exemplum of Platonic 'truths' that Christians must do object of usus iustus, the theme of the unum deum colere. The analysis intends to illuminate, through comparison, on the one hand, with the other occurrences - in Augustine and in ancient Christian authors - of the metaphor concerning Egyptian gold and silver, used by the Jews, and, on the other hand, with the rich Augustinian dossier on the comparison with the Platonists on the theme of the cultus of the unus deus, the aspects of specificity of the passage in question, in order to offer a contribution to the current wide scientific debate on the category interpretative of 'pagan monotheism'.
