Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Contemporary Europe lives a strong ambivalence towards the founding values of its civil, political and social culture of which equality (together with freedom) is a full part. Many remote and recent events are favoring the increase of economic and social inequalities rather than their reduction (as had happened in the last decades of the last century), putting a strain on social cohesion and the stability of the political-democratic systems that found the their raison d'être on expanding political and social inclusion. The most alarming signs and the most urgent challenges come from the spread of poverty even in advanced industrial countries which also possess the means to overcome the paradox of scarcity in abundance. Reducing inequalities therefore remains a strategic goal for extending human development in all societies.
