Abstract
Joachim of Fiore’s figures (figurae) may be related to the category of
images modern historiography uses to define «visual exegesis». This article
analyzes some characters of this system of representations and offers examples
that are contemporary to the Calabrese abbot. The meanings of figurae
are explored in light of the specific hermeneutics of Joachim of Fiore’s theology.
Particular attention is dedicated to the Liber figurarum by showing its
specificity and problems. The investigation focuses on images of trees, especially
on those that are called «genealogy trees». Finally, the article compares
some texts of Joachim of Fiore and the figures with the aim of locating
their interpretation in the framework of the development of his thought.
