Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] In this essay we want to argue that the value of the European project for the well-being and quality of life of people is today even greater than it was at its foundation. But it needs a change of direction with respect to prevailing trends; of a net discontinuity towards a more focused Europe, on few and crucial competences, and stronger, with adequate tools to manage functions that should be entrusted to the "federal" level, according to the principle of subsidiarity. In fact, global economic scenarios condemn small political subjects to a progressive and inevitable decline. There are in particular two dimensions of such scenarios that impact on the crisis and the prospects of the European project: concentration of economic power and agglomeration of development potential, on the one hand, increasing demand for public goods on the other.
