Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] A fragmented plaque found in 1896 in the parish church of S. Stefano in Garlate, a town on the Adda near Lecco, preserves the Christian epitaph of a Pierius [vir il] lustris laid in August 490. The data transmitted by the epigraphic text agree with those reported by the anonymous Valesian, source of the middle of the sixth century and related to Pierius comes domesticorum died during the battle of the Adda between Odoacer and Theodoric of 11 August 490. The identification of the character remembered in the inscription with the general of Odoacre and his burial in Garlate make it possible to set in the surrounding territory the clash with the Goths, usually located much further south, at the Via Emilia, and formulate a reconstructive hypothesis of the events that led to the battle.
