Abstract
The ample correspondence (of a scientific, technical and institutional nature) regarding Agostino Gemelli's studies on phonetics, which are kept in the Archives of the Catholic University in Milan, form a historical patrimony of considerable interest as regards the birth of a disciplinary area (Phonetics) in Italy and the world. Gemelli's international stature emerges from the exchange of letters (hitherto only partially explored), together with his pioneering role in the research carried out in his laboratory. The material in the archive also throws light on relations between American and European intellectuals in the second half of the twentieth century.
