Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Archaeological excavations carried out on the beach of the gulf
from Baratti (Piombino, Tuscany) have documented a protohistoric site
for the production of sea salt dated to the age of the
Final Bronze Age (10th century BC). Detailed sequence analysis
stratigraphy has allowed us to attest to the use of fire in the
salt mining activities and possibly the production of
blocks suitable to be easily transported and exchanged.
In this regard, it is worth noting the close relationship
between the production and commercialization of blocks of salt in the
coastal areas of Tuscany and the development of an economy
pastoral care and transhumance between the communities that during
the late Bronze Age occupied the Apennine regions
central. The new data provided by the investigations
of Baratti suggest reconsidering the nature of a series
of settlements located in the area surrounding the gulf (Riva
degli Etruschi, La Torraccia and Torre Mozza), who have provided
ceramic materials of similar chronology and that, as
paleoenvironmental reconstructions show, were located in
a favorable environment for the exploitation of sea salt.
