Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The Mediterranean frontier in the era of Charles V was a peculiar space at the crossroads of multiple worlds, made of violent dynamics and unscrupulous men, a fundamental experience for the birth of modern man. The emblematic case of the North African garrison of Bona, in Spanish hands from 1535 to 1540, was studied starting from the documents of the Archivo de Simancas. The difficult existence inside the fortress, made of smuggling, precariousness and relations between Christians and Muslims, came exacerbated by the corrupt commander Álvar Gómez, profiteer and instigator of murders. Among raids, earthquakes, thefts and rebellions, the tragic epilogue of the garrison of Bona is shown, with the sending of an imperial commissioner and the suicide of Gómez.
