Abstract

The essay sheds light on a period in the history of the Catholic University that has not been previously explored, spanning the years between the end of Father Gemelli’s “rectorship for life” in the 1950s and the rumblings of the student protests that, in the Milan campus, originated in1962-1963. Within the campus, the riots exploded in 1967 and continued through 1968. An analysis of journals and newspapers produced by the students allows one to understand the course of events along which the Catholic University was led by this year of unrest. These events can be read as more than merely an explosion of malcontent, triggered by the requests made by student unions. The analysis highlights the recurrence of problems that had already arisen a decade earlier, which then linked with the urgencies raised by the II Vatican Council. As well as providing new insight into the rectorships of Francesco Vito and Ezio Franceschini, the essay grasps the deep sources of the protests, the most important of which were the ideological tensions sparked from the Catholic nature of the University.
