Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Paul III Farnese was able to lend to Charles V in 1538, as many as 225,000 gold scudi, secured by a mortgage on the city of Novara and its district, since the city and city territory were separated from the duchy of Milan and entrusted perpetually to the Farnese with the title of marquises. However the annual interest was set at 6.6% and therefore the Farnese, who were prohibited from collecting taxes, received 15,000 gold scudi a year from the Camerario di Lombardia. The relationship was interrupted in 1603 because the Farnese were liquidated in gold by the Spaniards, who federo pay the ransom from the debt of Charles V to the citizens of Novara.
