Abstract

Morphological blood cell evaluation through microscopic examination remains a cornerstone in the integrated diagnostic process in hematology. Many factors contribute to a lack of standardization of this diagnostic tool. Several studies are reported in the literature on slide reviewing by experienced morphologists from different Institutions: the concordance rate is highly variable. The availability of a new technology, the MM, a robotic scanner microscope capable of digitizing an entire or a selected part of a glass slide, makes available on the web the optical scanning of PB and BM smears and allows a virtual community to be trained and harmonized with the same diagnostic approach of the optical microscope routinely used for the diagnosis, reproducing same facilities of smear navigation and zooming and offering the possibility of field identification (FOVs) through a grid system.
