Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The transfer of relics is one of the great ritual and festive inventions of Carlo Borromeo and has religious, devotional, spiritual and political values. Archbishop Borromeo begins a true festive tradition that transforms the city into a stage where the visible presence of the saints is manifested and the exemplary model of their earthly life is communicated, while also celebrating the tradition of the Ambrosian church. The tradition is taken up by Federico Borromeo who, in 1609, organizes a grandiose transfer of relics documented by a manuscript which contains the description of the ephemeral apparatuses made for the occasion. Federico Borromeo is not only a client but also shows that he is partially a creator of the rhetorical invention of the party, inspired by the ancient model of triumph.
