Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Selective mutism has a profound impact on the life of the young man and his family. The absence of speech occurs in the main social contexts making the growth path of the young person difficult and favoring the progressive relational closure of the whole family. The tendency to underestimate the situation and postpone the recognition of the disorder make the phenomenon still little studied today. There is a lack of clinical models that allow the development of effective treatment modalities, leading to planning uncertainties in operators.
The volume aims to fill this gap, by combining the presentation of the results of the research carried out with the methodology of the Grounded Theory to the framing of the problem. This work made it possible to articulate ways of recognizing and reading the developmental factors of the disorder and to identify clinical dimensions capable of orienting the intervention effectively. It follows the proposal of the multisituational treatment model (Multi-Situational Treatment, MST) which takes into account the various contexts and the different phases of the disorder, dealing with both the individual and the family, school and social dimensions in a synergistic way. Ample space is dedicated to therapeutic stays which constitute the most innovative intervention component of the MST model.
