[Autom. eng. transl.] Gabriele d'Annunzio maintains a special relationship with the literary tradition: the last of the classics and the first of the moderns, his work functions as a link between the old and the new, that is between categories that constantly appear in the foreground in substance and in the development of their production . The tradition is very rich, so to speak, in the entrance, or the reference to authors of the past, and the “outgoing” is equally rich, that is to say the team of those who, during the last century, developed ideas and suggestions of thematic and stylistic character coming from the work of d'Annunzio; tradition, the latter, often denied or disregarded, in the ambit of that broader phenomenon of the rejection of d'Annunzio which characterizes much of the literary twentieth century. An emblematic case, though often misrepresented or superficially interpreted, is that of I pastori alcionii, where d'Annunzio evokes a centuries-old tradition, from Esiodo to Dante, to engage in dialogue with the contemporary, represented by the figure of Pascoli to whom the composition is cryptically addressed.
